About

Post-dramatic form.
Socio-political inquiry.

Paata Tsikolia is an independent theatre maker, playwright, and director based in Georgia. His practice interrogates power, violence, and cultural trauma in rapidly shifting societies — grounded in the post-Soviet Georgian context and articulated through experimental dramaturgical structures.

Over the past decade, he has been a key contributor to the emergence and consolidation of Georgia's contemporary independent theatre movement. He is Founding Artistic Director of the Tbilisi New Drama Festival and a former Chief Director of Poti Valerian Gunia State Professional Theatre.

His writing-led and hybrid performance works dissect inherited narratives, institutional authority, and the instability of language under pressure. His internationally recognised play Medea s01e06 was presented at RADAR OST (Deutsches Theater Berlin, 2023) and Heidelberger Stückemarkt (2024), and received the SABA Literary Award for Best Play.

New play · After Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Georgian migrant worker in Berlin sneaks into a music festival and ends the night at gunpoint, reciting a misremembered Shakespeare monologue that saves his life. A structural mirror of A Midsummer Night's Dream transposed into contemporary Europe — a political play about who inherits the dream of European civilisation. Dramatic structure complete, writing in development.

My Name Is Lali

Monodrama / Cyberpunk · For a female performer

A civilisational elegy in the form of a corrupted archive. An AI companion survives the destruction of the world. For a hundred years, alone in the ruins, she replays her twelve memory logs — testimony for whoever finds her in the millennia ahead. One performer. Site-specific or large-space staging.
